5 ways to maintain a self care regimen


  With so much going on in your life, it can be hard to find time for yourself. It’s easy to put yourself last on the totem pole of priorities. But what happens when you don’t take care of yourself? This post is about that very topic and focuses on maintaining a consistent self-care regimen. How do you take care of yourself? What are some ways you participate in self-care activities? Let’s talk about it!

 

1) Set the mood

  Set the mood in your home with dim lighting and candles. You need to create the right environment for a relaxing bath or shower. Candles provide a warm glow and have a soothing effect on your senses. Dimming the lights also helps set the mood for relaxation. Some people find that a comfortable pair of pajamas helps them feel more relaxed.

  Take a few deep breaths. Focus on breathing deeply and slowly while focusing on something in front of you (a picture, a candle or a wall). This helps calm your body and mind so you can better enjoy the rest of your self care routine.

2) Have the tools for it

  We all know that self care is extremely important. It's the one thing no one ever wants to put high on their priority list, but it is necessary to make sure that you're taking good care of yourself.

3) Fit it into your schedule

  One of the reasons that it is so difficult to find time for self care is because it is not a priority. How many times have you heard yourself saying, "I know I should do this…" or "I really need to…" but when you look back on your day, you realize that you have been too busy to take care of yourself.

  You've heard it before, but it's worth repeating here: you will never find the time to sit still and do nothing. You have to make time for self care by setting aside a specific chunk of your day for taking care of yourself. That might mean going for a walk in your lunch break, leaving the office early on Fridays, or waking up 10 minutes earlier on Sunday mornings. Whatever works best for you and your schedule, carve out some time each day to focus on you.

 

4) Make it fun

  Self-care doesn't have to be boring. In fact, it shouldn't be boring, or else you'll get bored and give up on it. Make your self care routine fun! This doesn't mean that if you don't feel like it, you don't do it — but it does mean making your self care as enjoyable as possible. 

  Find creative ways to relax and de-stress. I personally like baths with my Calming chamomile bath salt , meditating, and burning a candle while binge watching my fav TV show! Others enjoy yoga, meditation, acupuncture treatments, or going out to dinner with friends. The key is finding something you enjoy doing that also provides some level of relaxation and/or stress relief so that when you're doing it, you feel good about yourself and your accomplishments.

  A fun activity will make all the difference in whether you want to do it or not. If you aren't having fun with your self-care routine, try something new until you find an activity that works for you.

5) Make it about you

  Make your self care routine about you and your needs. It's easy to get wrapped up in what other people want or need from you, especially if they are in your immediate circle of family and friends. In addition, the world often views women as caretakers first and foremost. But the truth is that women are not made to care for everyone but themselves. It's time to take a stand and recognize that you have needs too! Surround yourself with people who encourage you to make self-care a priority, while also holding you accountable when you're feeling stressed out or overwhelmed.

  Get in touch with your body. Think about how you're feeling and what you need at that moment. Do you need a nap or a good run? Is there something specific you want to do for yourself today?

  Set goals. Make your self care routine part of your life, not just an idea that pops up once in a while. Depending on your goals, sometimes this will be daily and other times it will be weekly or monthly.

 

As a final note, remember that it's okay if this is difficult for you to do at first because self-care is meant to be different for everyone.
